First of all congratulations on your decision to get a website up and going. Whether this is your first foray into the online world or you are a seasoned professional at registering a domain for the first time choosing a relevant domain name is extremely important if you want to succeed online.

What exactly is a domain name?

Quite simply put, a domain name is the name of your website. For instance, my domain name is Newbie Teacher.

Why is the relevancy of a domain name so important?

Oy! Where do I begin with this? Well for the purpose of this article, we will stick with the basics, later on I will write up a more in-depth discussion on domain names in relation to your target market.

Okay, so back to the question; the relevancy of a domain name. Well, let me put it to you this way. If your website is about “organizing small closets,” when you decide to register your domain name for that site, do not register a name like “Janes Tips.” It’s very vague and has nothing at all to do with organizing closets; instead, you would want to choose a name like “Closet Organizing Tips.”

If someone does a Google search for closet organizing tips, you would have a better chance of them stopping by your site with a name such as “Closet Organizing Tips” than with a name like “Jane’s Tips.”

I use and recommend Go Daddy for registering a domain name. Go Daddy is one of the top registrants of Domains in the U.S. their specialty is domain registration. Go Daddy has a solid reputation and have been in business for years.

Starting a new business can be more than a little overwhelming. There are just so many things to learn, and so many details to take care of. It’s easy to get sidetracked, it’s easy to get discouraged.

If you are new to the online world, and want to stay on target, here is my list of 10 things a newbie should not do.

1. Don’t try to do it all at once, tackle it one task at a time

2. Don’t be a “serial researcher”, research, find the answer, and then DO IT

3. Don’t EVER doubt your abilities

4. Don’t forget why you are doing this, set goals and try to meet them

5. Don’t get sidetracked by all the “make money fast” offers

6. Don’t forget it takes time to see results

7. Don’t try to do it all alone, join a forum in your niche for support

8. Don’t lose sight of the big picture, make an action plan

9. Don’t let family and friends discourage you

10. DON’T GIVE UP, YOU CAN DO IT!

Google Alerts are used when you want to stay informed or kept abreast of a certain topic or phrase. For instance, you have a blog or business about “How to care for tropical birds.” You can setup an Alert with Google and they will send you an alert complete with the link to the source anytime the phrase or topic “Tropical Birds” is mentioned online.

I love Google Alerts and use it all the time, it really comes in handy when someone is discussing a subject of interest to you on a blog, that way you can pop in and leave a comment to show your support or leave your opinion on the subject. It’s a great way to interact with others who share the same interests as you.
